ORDINANCE NO. 514
An Ordinance of the City Council of the City of Lakewood, Washington, amending Chapter 15A.14 (International Fire Code) of the Lakewood Municipal Code (LMC) regarding the requirement for automatic fire sprinklers in townhouses.
WHEREAS, the City of Lakewood adopted Ordinance 450 on June 18, 2007, which adopted International Code Council (ICC) Performance Codes for Buildings and Facilities which included, among others, the International Fire Code and International Residential Code;
WHEREAS, Ordinance 450 included the sprinkler requirement for townhouses with an aggregate area of all connected townhouses equaling five thousand (5,000) (five thousand) square feet or greater, which was codified as an additional provision to the International Fire Code in LMC Section 15A.14.030, Subsection GG;
WHEREAS, after receiving testimony, the City Council now seeks to amend the sprinkler requirement in LMC Section 15A.14.030, Subsection GG to promote economic development without adversely impacting public safety, health and welfare;
WHEREAS, the amendment to the sprinkler requirement will not substantially affect other development in the City;
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, WASHINGTON, DO ORDAIN as follows:
Section 1. That Section 15A.14.030, Subsection GG, regarding 903 2.7.2 of the International Fire Code, is amended to read as follows:
All zero lot line townhouses (per the IRC) with an aggregate area of all connected townhouses equaling 5,000 square feet or greater shall be sprinklered.
An approved automatic fire sprinkler system shall be installed throughout every building which is a group of townhouses, as defined in the 2006 International Residential Code, which contains five (5) or more townhouse units.

Section 2: Severability: If any portion of this Ordinance or its application to any person or circumstances is held invalid, the remainder of the Ordinance or the application of the provision to other persons or circumstances shall not be affected.
Section 3: Effective Date. This Ordinance shall be in full force and effect five (5) days after the publication of the Ordinance Summary.
